April is our 6th birthday, and we would like to thank all of our existing customers for hosting with us over this time, so we are celebrating with 6 offers for 6 days. Brand New Low Density Hosting Services Our brand low density hosting, introduced today, is for customers who need more power for their website. It is designed for businesses who have larger sites and need more power dedicated to running them, along with the best reliability. It is similar to shared hosting, except that the maximum number of domains allowed on one server is 50, and each domain has its own application pool in IIS. This means that each site is better isolated from other sites on the same server than in shared hosting and it has more resources dedicated to it. The result is that larger, more intensive sites will perform better and be more reliable, without the cost of running your own server, and the knowledge that requires. Each low density server also has an instance of SQL Server 2008 Web Edition installed and MySQL 5. These are exclusively for use by the domains on that server, rather than using our standard shared hosting ones. Again this means better performance, as there are fewer databases. As with all our web servers, a local FTP server is installed on each server. The same Helm control panel is used for low density hosting, along with our SmarterMail mail server, SmarterStats for site analytics and our 4 redundant DNS servers. As each website has its own application pool, problems with one site will not affect the other sites on the same server. It also allows us to securely offer full trust in ASP.Net - something which is not possible on standard shared hosting, for security reasons. ISAPI Rewrite is included free on every low density plan, and all the ASP components that you have come to expect on our standard hosting are also included. These low density plans are available both to regular customers and to resellers. Whichever option you choose, the price is the same. The only difference is in the control panel - the reseller control panel allows you to sell to your customers in an unbranded fashion. If you are not reselling, it is best to choose the regular option, so as to avoid having your control panel filled with unnecessary options. If you are an existing reseller and want to start offering our low density plans as well, a second separate Helm account will be needed to do this, as our low density hosting can not be mixed with the standard plans. If you are looking for the ultimate in reselling, we offer a Dedicated LD service, where an entire dedicated server is reserved for the use of your customers. It is your choice as to how many domains you put on it: you can keep the density low to get the best performance, or fill it up with as many customers as you wish. It is completely managed for you, so you do not have to worry about the technical skills required. Domain/SSL Pricing Changes As our long term customers will know, our domain registration prices have been fixed since we started offering hosting, over 6 years ago. We set the prices as low as possible, as we considered the registrations to be a service to customers rather than a way to generate profit. Since then, a lot has changed. A couple of years ago, ICANN increased the fees charged for a number of the key domain extensions. Many suppliers, including ours, took this oportunity to increase their prices. Separately, no one can have missed the worldwide financial turmoil in recent times. One of the effects of this has been a dramatic fall in the Pound Sterling exchange rate against the US Dollar over the past couple of years. Since all of the domain registrations are billed to us in US dollars (except the UK registrations supplied by Nominet), this has increased the cost to us. The result of these two situations is that for a while now, we have been subsidising registrations by selling them for less than they are costing us. With the exchange rate showing no sign of recovery back to previous levels, we can not continue to do this and so we have been forced to do a complete review of all of our domain registration prices. The majority of our prices have had to be revised upwards in order to cover the increased costs. A few have been reduced in price as we have found cheaper sources for them and a few others have been withdrawn from sale due to supply issues. We are also introducing some new extensions, including .me and .mobi. UK domains provided by Nominet (.co.uk, .org.uk etc) are remaining at the same price, since they are unaffected by exchange rate issues). A similar revision has also been done on SSL certificates, as they also suffer from the exchange rate. These pricing changes will apply to both new orders and renewals of existing domains from the 1st June 2010. We are giving over a months notice of these changes as we are aware of the effect that they may have and that some resellers who sell our services on may need to adjust their own pricing. We do appologise for any inconvinence caused by these changes and we hope that you can understand the reasons why we have been forced to do this. Our prices for the most common extensions are still remaining lower than many of the large well known domain companies in the UK. Microsoft .Net Framework 4.0 With the success of the recently announced maintainance, .Net 4 is now installed and configured on all of our web servers. Unfortunatley due to some issues with Helm, there has been a delay in getting the option to switch to it in Helm. We are working on it now and hope to have this ready for use within the next week. In the meantime, if you urgently need .Net 4 on your website with us, please contact support and we can manually switch the version for you. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- VI. New UK Servers All new domains created on our UK servers will now go onto one of two new servers - "Metis" and "Miranda". These are in addition to the first Low Density server - "Charon". We also have some other servers installed and ready to be brought online when needed.
